Was it the Flathead Lake Monster?
It has been a while since the last report of a Flathead Lake Monster sighting. But residents of the Finley Point area outside of Polson, Montana say that the lake monster, analogous to the Lock Ness Monster, or Nessie, is back. On the evening of Saturday, May 12, 2012, Three residents say that they spotted the beast swimming against the current just yards off of their Flathead Lake front property. The residents of Finley Point claim that what they saw was at least 25 feet long.
Could Flathead Lake support such a large creature? The Flathead Lake Monster wouuld be a remnant of the ancient interglacial Lake Missoula, from 13,000 to 15,000 years ago. At that time, the lake was more comparable to the size of Lake Michigan and would have supported many more species than it currently supports. But since it would be biologically impossible for just one monster to be living in the lake for so many thousands of years, if something is out there, there would have to be a breeding population. This breeding population, with sustainable genetics, would number at least in the dozens.
Dozens of 25 foot long creatures in the lake that are only spotted once every few years?
Natural waves and wakes from boats converge forming odd patterns. These convergences often fool the eye, tricking people into seeing things that sometimes look like long, moving patterns. In all likelihood a convergence of waves, bouncing off of each other and combining is what was seen on May 12th, not a Flathead Lake Monster.
On the other hand, the first time that I take a swim in the lake this summer and I feel something rub across my foot, its a guarantee that my first thought will be one of panic. I guess that means that a part of me believes.
